Surgical Care
The operating room and recovery room are equipped
with state-of-the-art monitoring and procedure equipment.
Minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures have
become commonplace. Surgical procedures are performed
in general surgery, orthopedics, ENT, and
ophthalmology. The surgical nursing staff follow patients
from registration through discharge. The surgical team
members usually include the surgeon, a nurse anesthetist,
nurses, and a surgical assistant. As a team they
provide a sterile and safe surgical environment.
Obstetrics
Our attractive state-of-the-art labor/delivery
area with its highly trained, friendly staff
promotes a positive birthing experience for your family. We have the latest in technology, including
in-room whirlpools, breast-feeding specialists and
universal newborn hearing screening. We pride ourselves
on making this time very special and memorable for all
involved. We offer a wide variety of educational programs
to meet the needs of each individual for baby and
self-care after discharge.
Intensive Coronary Care Unit (ICCU)
Our Intensive Coronary Care Unit is staffed by professionals
who use specialized equipment and knowledge
to provide advanced medical care. The ICCU provides
around the clock, highly specialized nursing care for
patients who are seriously ill, injured, or are recovering
from surgery. The goals of the ICCU are to keep the
patient’s condition from getting worse and preventing
new complications. The ICCU also provides treatment
to help the patient achieve the fullest possible recovery.
Community Education
Our Community Education Department works with various organizations to coordinate educational programs to promote

24 Hour Emergency Care
Emergency care is provided 24-hours a day by physicians
and registered nurses who are specially trained in
ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and Trauma
Care. Patients of all ages of the life span are seen and
treated. Patients who present with critical illnesses and
need specialized treatment not available here will be
stabilized and transferred to a larger medical or tertiary
center. Others will be treated in the Emergency Department
and admitted here or discharged home. On occasion
if the Emergency Department is very busy and
someone comes in who is critical, you may be asked to
wait until that person has been cared for.
Urgent Care
Urgent Care is a service provided for the community to
utilize for the evaluation of minor medical problems
such as ear infections, sore throats, coughs, fevers,
sprains and strains. Urgent Care was developed in
response to the community’s need to fill the gap
between care provided by your regular physician and the
Emergency Department. Urgent Care hours are Monday
through Friday, 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and Saturday
and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Urgent Care is not
available on holidays.
Family Resource Center
Family Resource Center offers support, guidance and information to enable families to be as healthy and
happy as possible. Programming includes: Parenting Classes, Safe Sitter Program, Workshops, Family
Drop-In, Dad ’n Me, Special Events, Parenting the First Year, Toy and Resource Lending Library,
Equipment Loan Program, Car Seat Program and Warmline. Family Resource Center programs and
services are provided free of charge. On-site child care is available for most programs. For additional

WEE Care Child Care
WEE Care Child Day Care is an employer-sponsored program that provides quality child care for its employees and
the Prairie du Chien area. WEE Care is a state licensed group day care that serves 64 children (39 day care and
25 pre-school positions) six weeks through 12 years of age. Services offered at WEE Care include: infant care, all
child care for full and part-time students, pre-school programming in age appropriate
sessions, before and after school care, and school age summer care. All staff meet educational
and experience requirements for the state of Wisconsin regulations. The early years
are the learning years and “WEE” make them count. Contact WEE Care Child Care at

Lifeline
Emergency help can be available in your home 24 hours a day with a push of a button when a companion call device is
connected to your telephone. For more information contact the hospital’s Patient/Family Services Department.

Home Health Care
Registered Nursing, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Medical Social Worker and Home Health
Aide services are available to qualifying patients requiring medical attention. Care is directed by your
attending physician. Staff will work with you to ensure your health care needs are met, assess your
health status and response to care. A mutual plan of care with goals will be established and carried
out ongoing while on the agency for service. Services are widely accepted as an efficient means of
providing quality health care at a reasonable cost, therefore are generally covered by most health

Home Medical Equipment (HME)
Home Medical Equipment offers individual home services. We specialize in home oxygen concentrators, nebulizer
equipment, CPAP, suction machines, hospital beds, wheelchairs, walkers, and bath benches. Along with state-of-the-art
equipment, come the in-home services and Patient/Family Education provided by a Registered/Certified Respiratory
Therapist/Technician.
Hospice
Hospice offers support for those with a terminal illness
who no longer wish to have curative treatment. Hospice
focuses on all aspects of care such as physical, emotional,
social, medical, financial and spiritual needs.
Hospice offers inpatient services including
acute, respite and IMC levels of care.
Hospice utilizes the team approach to
care and focuses on patient and family
as a unit of care. As a courtesy, one free meal per day is
available to families of Hospice patients. Visitors can
visit Hospice patients at any time. The Hospice Suite
and Lounge is available to patients on a first-come, first-serve
basis. If more than one Hospice patient is in the
hospital, we provide privacy to our patients with a
private room whenever possible.

Personal Home Services
Personal Home Services will help provide that continuum of care for patients that need assistance following a hospital
stay and Home Health Care. The services offer in-home, private pay, services of a Personal Care Provider, Homemaker
Aide, or Registered Nurse. A comprehensive assessment will be completed by a Registered Nurse prior to initiating
services, and all ongoing services will be supervised by a Registered Nurse. For additional information, call Home

Intermediate Care
Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital offers private pay
Intermediate Care to individuals who need 24-hour
supervision for either a short time or long term. Intermediate
Care is staffed 24-hours per day by our nursing
personnel. Activities are provided. For further information,

Respite Care
Our Respite Care is designed to relieve and support
family members and caregivers to meet emergency needs
or to ease the participation into alternate living arrangements.
Respite Care is available on a prearranged or
emergency basis. Please contact Patient/Family Services,

Skilled Care
The Skilled Nursing Unit is designed for patients who no
longer need acute care in a hospital but still require
additional short-term skilled care before discharge.
Rehabilitation and specialized nursing care are emphasized.
Walter Schmidt Independent Living
Walter Schmidt Independent Living is for the alert older adult who wishes to remain as independent as possible without
the problems and efforts of living alone...or maintaining a home. It offers a home-like atmosphere for residents who are
free to come and go as they please. Houseparents who are “tuned in” to the special needs and likes of the aging adult
are on duty 24 hours a day. Independent Living also offers all meals and snacks with family style dining, laundry facilities
with linen and housekeeping service, assistance with medication, planned activities and assistance with personal care.
Adult Day Care for seniors is also available on a per hour basis. For additional information, contact the director of

Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is an outpatient service which provides Oncology (cancer) patients the opportunity to receive their
chemotherapy closer to home. Chemotherapy is administered by registered nurses trained in the mixing, administration
and monitoring of the Oncology patient.

Foot Care
Foot Care allows individuals the opportunity for assistance with appropriate foot care. Foot Care is on a
private pay basis, and care includes maintaining a brief medical history for each client, a foot bath, nail trim,
and foot massage. Physician referrals will be made when staff note an area of concern. Foot Care is
provided by Registered Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants, and is supervised by a Registered Nurse.

Hemodialysis
Hemodialysis is a process of filtering the patient’s blood when the kidneys are no longer able to do so. Our
hemodialysis unit has five chairs and runs two shifts of clients three times a week, for outpatients only. This unit
is staffed by registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants. We serve people in the surrounding
communities of Wisconsin and Iowa. As an outpatient satellite unit, we are able to provide convenience and those
special touches unique to a smaller rural unit.
Laboratory
The Laboratory has certified laboratory technicians available 24-hours a day. They can perform a large variety of tests
that your physician may request to help in diagnosing causes of your health problems and in following up on how your
treatment plan is going. A few tests that need specialized equipment or personnel to perform the test, are sent out to a
larger laboratory by courier service each day. The hospital’s lab machines are wired directly into a computerized system
that will generate reports with accuracy and speed to the nursing unit that is presently responsible for your care.
Medical Imaging Department
The Medical Imaging Department provides diagnostic examinations per your physician’s request that include general
Radiology (X-Ray), Fluoroscopy, Mammography, Computerized Tomography (CAT Scan), Ultrasound, and Nuclear
Medicine Scans in the hospital, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) exams that are done in a
mobile unit that comes to the hospital on a regular basis. There are certified technicians available 24-
hours a day to perform many of the exams, but some of the exams require a radiologist (a physician
who specializes in medical imaging) be present to do the actual test. A radiologist is here each
weekday to read the exams that have been done by the technicians when a radiologist was not
available. The Medical Imaging Department also has a teleradiology system that electronically sends,
over the telephone lines, exams that your physician feels need to have immediate consultation.
Pulmonology
Pulmonary Rehab is a combination of exercise reconditioning and education that enables the participant with
Emphysema, Chronic Bronchitis, Asthma and other forms of chronic lung disease to maximize their breathing
abilities and thus ease the challenge of their daily lives.
Respiratory Therapy
The Respiratory Therapy Department uses highly sophisticated equipment to aid in restoring normal breathing. Diagnostic
tests and therapeutic treatments are conducted by Registered/Certified Respiratory Therapists under the direction of
your physician.
Sleep Study
Sleep Study is an outpatient service, provided two nights a week with state-of-the-art equipment. The Respiratory
Therapy staff perform the sleep disorder study upon referral from your physician. The Sleep Study is located next to
Respiratory Therapy in the northcentral wing of the hospital.
Aquatic Therapy
Our state-of-the-art aquatic pool provides:
- Physiological–cardiovascular benefits
- Physical benefits by increasing flexibility, endurance, and circulation, and by improving coordination
- Body Composition as 20% more fat is burned
- Skeletal benefits as therapy encourages new bone growth, there is a less chance of failure,
therapy has an overall physical benefit, and the exercise feels good
- Economic/social benefits as aquatic therapy reduces rehab time by 40-50%
- Psychological
Athletic Trainer
Our Licensed Athletic Trainers are health care professionals who specialize in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation
of injuries in cooperation with physicians and other healthcare personnel. They work with school athletics in area
school districts and with “healthy-injured” individuals. Athletic Training methods produce excellent overall outcomes
with the best results in functional outcomes returning individuals quickly to their pre-injury status. Rehabilitation by
certified athletic trainers significantly improves functional status of patients following reconstructive surgery of major
joints.

Cardiac Rehabilitation
Cardiac Rehabilitation is divided into three phases: Phase I is for inpatients, Phase II is for outpatients,
and Phase III is a self-monitored outpatient program. All phases must be prescribed by your
physician. Education for diet management is available through the hospital dietician. Cardiac Rehabilitation
aims to improve the patient’s functional and emotional well being. Healthy Hearts is a
follow-up outpatient program which is not covered by insurance.
Lymphedema Services
Persons suffering from lymphedema may receive therapy through Occupational Therapy. A physician referral is required.
In most cases, treatment is covered by Medicare and private medical insurance companies. For additional information,

Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy is the key to independence for people of all ages who must deal with health problems in managing
their daily lives. Occupational Therapy requires the active participation of the person through goal-directed activities
where all persons’ abilities, motivations, and goals come together to enhance role performance. Therapy includes rehabilitation
for shoulder, arm or hand dysfunction caused by injury or illness, as well as activities of daily living, such as
bathing and dressing. Therapeutic exercises and activities help improve strength, coordination, cognitive skills, and
developmental skills.
Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy helps people learn to function within the limits of their disability, whether the disability is severe,
moderate, short-term or permanent. Physical Therapy utilizes heat, cold, electricity, and massage, as well as exercise, to
attain desired strength, flexibility, and pain control. Patients and families are also instructed in home exercise to facilitate
recovery. Patients that may benefit from Physical Therapy include people with work-related injuries, people who have
experienced strokes and head or spinal injuries, or people who have been injured in falls or other accidents.
Speech Therapy
The Speech Therapy Department provides evaluation and treatment to individuals who have difficulties with their communication
and/or swallowing. Services are provided by licensed professionals with extensive training in this field.
Speech Therapy focuses on rehabilitating the patient and family with the goal of obtaining optimal communication and/or
swallowing skills.
Crawford Abuse Resistance Effort (C.A.R.E.)
C.A.R.E.’s mission is to coordinate, train, and share information and resources among schools, government,
community agencies and organizations, law enforcement, businesses, religious affiliations,
youth, parents, and concerned individuals for the prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse

Crawford County Senior Resources–Congregate Meal Site
A centralized dining facility can provide not only a well-balanced meal, but also a social outlet for older adults. Meals
served Monday through Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the hospital dining room.
Meal Service and Home Delivered Meals within Prairie du Chien Area
The hospital has a contract with Crawford County to assist you with meal service. These programs are only available to
residents of Crawford County. Meals can be delivered to home bound individuals unable to cook for themselves. These
individuals must live within three miles of Prairie du Chien. When clients do not fall within the parameters of the established
routes, frozen meals can be arranged through Crawford County Senior Resources or private pay. For more information
