Summer 2008 PdC Memorial now offers digital mammography“Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital has expanded its health and wellness services available to area residents with the addition of a new Selenia full field digital mammography system,” announces Kelly Mundt, MT (AMT), Director of Diagnostic Services. “Memorial Hospital is proud to be the first hospital in the area providing digital mammography, ahead of even some of the larger hospitals in this region. Digital mammography allows us to provide our patients with the latest diagnostic technology in the prevention and early detection of breast cancer.” Mammography is the best tool in early diagnosis giving patients a much better chance of survival and leading a long, productive life. Digital mammography is quickly becoming the standard in breast imaging; it incorporates revolutionary imaging technology that provides incredibly sharp images. With the new digital mammography system, Gundersen Lutheran radiologists, contracted to interpret medical imaging studies at Memorial Hospital, can view and manipulate the images on high-resolution computer monitors that enhance visualization of the structures within the breast tissues. They can also adjust brightness and contrast, and zoom in specific areas to help detect small calcifications, masses, and other changes that may be signs of early cancer. Kelly Mundt explains further, “Patients may notice little difference when having a digital mammogram. The procedure is the same as traditional film mammography. The radiologist, however, can process and retrieve the images faster. And because digital mammography is filmless, nothing has to be developed, expediting procedures. Images are analyzed on a monitor and stored electronically. Hard copies can always be produced if needed.” Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital reminds residents that breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. Statistics demonstrate that one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her life. “I encourage women to talk to your physician about scheduling a mammogram, or if you have no breast symptoms, call Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital and make an appointment yourself to complete your yearly physical,” adds Kelly Mundt. The American Cancer Society lists the warning signs of breast cancer: a palpable lump, a bloody or cloudy discharge, skin dimpling or shape change, change in skin texture or color and breast sores that do not heal. Breast cancer screenings for women age 40 and over include a mammogram and a Clinical Breast Exam (CBE) annually. For women in their 20s and 30s, it is recommended to have a Clinical Breast Exam at least every 3 years, and women in their 20s may choose whether or how often to do a breast self-exam. The Medical Imaging Department encourages women to perform breast self-exams to become familiar with the normal look and feel of the breast so that any changes may be promptly reported to their healthcare professional.
